Award Winners + International And Canadian Fiction And Experimental Awards

Amela Jimenez
Amelia is a multi media Chilean artist who incorporates photography and sculptural objects to her work. Jimenez has been involved with artists run centers since 1989, as a board member and in the program- ming committee. She has co- ordinated, co-curated and curated exhibitions of emerging Latin- American artists for Harbourfront Centre, The Royal Ontario Museum and other alternatives gallery spaces. During the year 2000/01, through a Grant from The Canada Council for the Arts, she was a curatorial resident at A Space Gallery.

Manuel Rozental
Rozental has been increasingly involved in the study and promotion of diverse cultural expressions both as a source of inspiration for co- existence and as the most profound and powerful way of understanding societies and life beyond the excessively rational, functional and commercial language that prevails today. Indigenous, afro-American, youth, women, peasant popular creative ways of expressing by challenging the limitations of established art forms through fusions and daring approaches to music, visual arts, literature, theatre, street language, performance and story-telling contain keys to a mean- ingful and passionate existence. Because, in his view, film has infinite possibilities to reflect, create and emulate, it is the cultural expression par excellence to inspire our lives.

Marcos Arriaga
Marcos is a Peruvian filmmaker and cinematographer whose work has been exhibited internationally as a cinematographer and as a documentary filmmaker. His most recent work Promised Landwas screened at HOTDOCS 2002 and Global Festival in Edmonton. At the present is finalizing his maters in Fine Arts at York University.

Ricardo Acosta
Programmer and Editor, Acosta has been with the Toronto Latino Film and Video Festival from the start as programmer and as part of the selection committee. He has curated several comprehensive Cuban film programs. Acosta has a great knowledge of Canadian and Latin American independent film and video history.

Paula “Bomba” Gonzales
Graffiti artist, singer, rapper, musician, documentary maker, cultural activist, Bomba has been actively working in the arts in the Latino Youth circuit. Her work has brought her international attention with several recording companies and she has established working contacts with film and video makers in Chile, Colombia and the USA and other countries in Latin America.

International And Canadian Documentary Awards

Kristina McLaughlin

Kristina is a producer and partner in Primitive Entertainment Inc. She recently produced McLuhan’s Wake, a feature length documentary on the life and teachings of Marshall McLuhan in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada and The Trouble With Boys, a one hour documentary that compares new discoveries in the health science field to the personal experience of boys and their parents, for Discovery Health Canada and the Discovery Health Channels in the United States and England. She is currently completing Dangerous Obsessions, a documentary for Discovery Channel, CTV and Canal D on the stalking epidemic, and is in production on Dear Juliet, produced in association with TV Ontario, Knowledge Network and Bravo!, with funding from the Canadian Television Fund. Kristina sits on the board of the Canadian Independent Film Caucus.

Simon Casanova
Cuban actor, storyteller and play- wright. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts and at the Superior Institute of Fine Art in Havana. He has worked for twenty years performing contemporary and classic theatre. He recently collaborated with Soheil Parsa on Aurshash for Modern Times. At the present Simon is working in a new play for the Loraine Kimsa Theatre for Young people called Lucumi and the Magic Ringbased on Afro Cuban traditions.
