aluCine's Festival Awards exist to reward the talent, creativity and unique film-making capabilities of Latin American artists and their ability to move audiences with their innovative and inspiring work. We celebrate each of their distinct styles and the unique lens through which they view the world.

Best Emerging Local Filmmaker

LIFT presents the award for Best Emerging Local Filmmaker.
The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto will present this award to a local film or video maker at the early stage of their career. This award includes a LIFT membership as well as a generous $500 credit for equipment and facility rentals, workshops and courses. aluCine would like to congratulate LIFT on its ability to provide affordable access to equipment, education and space for those who want to make films, out of a passion for, and commitment to, the practice of filmmaking on celluloid.

V-TAPE presents the award for Best Video Art Vtape is  generously presenting the winner with a $400 cash prize. aluCine would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of V-TAPE to the promotion and distribution of video art in Canadian and international video community.

The Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre and aluCine Toronto Latin Film & Media Arts Festival present the award for Best Short Film The Canadian Filmakers Distribution Centre and aluCine are joining forces to present this year's winner with a $500 cash prize. aluCine is pleased to collaborate with the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre whose efforts in increasing distribution opportunities, audiences and visibility for artists and independent film are invaluable.

Rodrigo Moreno and Toronto Image Works present the Canadian and
International Honorable Mentions


The winners will be presented with "Compartiendo", Tarapoto, La Amazona Peruana, a photograph by Chilean-Canadian artist Rodrigo Moreno, printed courtesy of Toronto Image Works. Rodrigo Moreno has an remarkable artistic track record which most recently awarded him the City of Toronto's Tree Calendar for 2011. Rodrigo's commitment  to both his practice and his community are exemplified in his coordination of "From the Inside Out", a photography project incorporating photographs of residents taken by local youths, along with oral histories of life in the Lawrence Heights community. In addition, aluCine would like to acknowledge Toronto Image Works outstanding photographic services as well as their commitment to hosting a wide variety of shows from sculptural photo-based exhibitions, to Giclee fine art prints, to traditional photographic shows.




Juan Baquero
Juan Baquero is a Toronto based director and story editor. In 2007 he was selected as a Quebecor Documentary Program Fellow and took part in Hot Docs' director's lab. In 2008, he was chosen to participate in the OMDC/DOC Mentorship program at Hot Docs. Listen to This!, his debut Canadian feature length documentary -commissioned by TVO and Bravo- premiered at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival in 2010 and was selected as one of the 10 top audience favourites. The film explores the influence of music as a creative outlet for kids living in the inner city. Before moving to Canada, Juan worked for over 10 years as a TV director and producer in Colombia, where he created, directed and produced dozens of hours of original TV programming. Juan holds a B.S. degree in telecommunications from the University of Florida and a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School. He also studied film production in Australia. Juan is currently developing Hockey in the Hood, another feature length documentary about an inner city hockey team.


Deanna Bowen
Deanna Bowen is a Toronto based interdisciplinary artist and lecturer at the University of Toronto, Scarborough. She received her Masters degree in Visual Art at the University of Toronto in 2008 and her Diploma of Fine Arts from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1992. Her work has been exhibited internationally in numerous film festivals and galleries. She has received several grants in support of her artistic practice, most notably from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Toronto Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal, Telefilm Canada, and British Columbia Cultural Services. Bowen's recent works have been shown at Diaz Contemporary and the Images Festival of Film, Video & New Media. Her recently commissioned eighteen minute performed oral history piece sum of the parts: what can be named premiered at VTape in March 2010. She is currently working on several photo based projects and a yet to be titled feature length experimental video projection. Her latest solo exhibition Stories to pass on... tours nationally through 2013 and upcoming group exhibitions include Warm Ice at the Art Gallery of Peterborough in November 2010 and Centre for Incidental Activisms (CIA) at the Art Gallery of York University in January 2011.


Madi Piller
Madi Piller is a Toronto based Filmmaker born in Lima-Peru. She is a Graduate from the University of Lima in Communication Sciences. She began her career in advertising producing TV commercials for a wide variety of products. She lived in Paris and Bogota. In 1998, Madi moved to Toronto and started working closely with the independent film community doing experimental short films, programming and mentoring. Her films have been shown at many festivals and art venues across Canada and abroad. Her work has been produced with the support of the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and the National Film Board of Canada. Madi's admiration for the art of animation has motivated her to serve as volunteer President on the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) Board of Directors.
