The OCIC is providing aluCine an important space for networking, skill-sharing and cross-cultural understanding. We were asked to provide several video workshops in different areas in Ontario as part of a competitive video contest called The Kaleidoscope Real World Video Challenge targeted to young students in Canada.
“Our aim is to get as many youth 8-18 years of age to participate in this contest, to learn about global issues, and to become active in working towards social justice. We would like to work with aluCine in helping us promote the project and helping us give the tools necessary so that young people may be able to use their voice and creativity to participate in the contest”.

The video works produced in the 2008 workshops exceeded our expectations. Although the works have quality and technical proficiency, they demonstrate the creative potential of the participants and above all they reflect an independent spirit and desire to make professional intimate works, in a short time. (See: Self-Representation Video Workshops DVD1 and DVD 2).
The workshops were divided in two parts one with marginalized youth and the other with the queer Latin community.

We are working with the Center for Spanish Peoples, Hispanic Council and Ontario Coalition for International Cooperation teaching workshops to Youth in Community Centers and schools. On February 29th, 2008 in collaboration with the Spanish Speaking Peoples we finished the production of 11 video works made by Youth from the Jane, Wilson and Finch area. At the moment we are working with members of the queer community to produce 7 videos. From April to August 2008 we will be working for the Hispanic Council with a group of 40 youth from different high schools in the city preparing them to produce their own videos. We are teaching video workshops to around 70+ youth for the Council for International Cooperation as part of their project real World Challenge competition for youth under 17 years old.

Jorge Lozano,Guillermina Buzio,
We worked in Cali, Colombia with 25 Youth from the Comunas (neighborhoods where there is history of social-political violence) and produced three 20 minutes shorts, written, shot and directed by the participants. These works are a testimony of the participants desire to find a balance between violence, peace, justice and a creative life. They mix experimental techniques with traditional narrative, hip hop, spoken word and dance. |

From July 17th till July 28 2006 Southern Currents Film and Video Collective facilitated a Hands On Video Workshop for Latin Youth mostly from the Jane and Finch area. The workshop consisted of two weeks, full time intensive learning how to produce low budget video. We worked with ten ¨Youth¨ first time video makers from scratch. Working collectively for ten days to produce ten short videos pieces. Each participant directed their own video and worked in the videos of the other participants, acting and/or doing lights, camera, sound and editing.
These young people come from low-income families. Some of them have been in jail, belong to gangs and are in probation. Isolated from mainstream art, needless to say they don't know experimental video. However after becoming familiar we the diverse ¨art languages¨ reflected in the screening and discussion works by local filmmakers they were able to quickly recognize and learn how to conceptualize the ideas that they wanted to translate as moving images in their work. A testimony of their talent is obvious in the works they created and in their commitment to the project. |

During the month of November we facilitated video, sound and photography workshops to Youth in Cali from neighborhoods with a history of political and social violence. We worked with 24 participants who directed, shot and edited 17 videos. We followed the same hands on methodology as the one used in Canada. The videos are highly personal and intimate and they are a testimony to the creativity and technical skills of Colombian Youth from popular sectors. They are available for screening. |

In 2005, we offered a series of workshops in partnership with the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples. They were aimed at Latin Youth from risk areas in Toronto.
During this workshop 6 participants between the ages of 13 and 20 produced the 20min documentary. The Street is a Mutha, with outstanding results. The video explored issues of violence in Toronto in its relationship to minorities and youth. Under our guidance, these 6 adolescents wrote, produced, directed, edited and composed the music of the video and will go on to presenting and contextualizing it at several community centers and schools in GTA. |
