Our Definition of Equity
At [Southern Currens equity means actively working to dismantle systemic barriers in the arts by centering Latin American and Latin Canadian artists of all backgrounds, with a specific commitment to those who have been historically marginalized—including queer, racialized (BIPOC), disabled, immigrant, and low-income artists.
We recognize that within our own Latinx communities, inequities persist across lines of race, gender, class, and language. Our equity approach is intersectional, meaning we acknowledge and respond to the overlapping ways artists experience privilege and oppression.
We commit to:
Redistributing access and opportunities to ensure representation at all levels—creative, curatorial, organizational, and audience.
Valuing lived experience and community knowledge as central to artistic excellence.
Uplifting emerging and established artists alike through support structures tailored to their realities.
Challenging tokenism by fostering long-term, meaningful engagement with artists and communities.
Creating safer, inclusive spaces that affirm diverse identities within Latin American and Latin Canadian contexts—including Afro-Latinx, Indigenous, and white Latinx voices.
Equity for us is not a checkbox—it's a continuous practice of reflection, accountability, and structural change to build a more just and representative arts ecosystem.
