LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN IN CANADIAN POLITICS

Isabel Inclan

2022 - Canada - 20’ - Documentary

World Premier

With a political background from their Latin American countries of origin, marked by dictatorship and civil wars (Chile, Colombia, El Salvador), several Latinas in Canada are active in parliamentary politics as candidates for municipal, provincial, and federal elections. As an example of "transnational feminism," Alejandra Bravo (Toronto councilor), Andrea Vasquez and Sandra Lozano talk in this documentary about how the dictatorships and civil wars in Chile, Colombia, and El Salvador have been a “political incubator” that flourishes in Canada through their participation in politics. These are their stories as candidates more than three times. Days before presenting this documentary as my Master's thesis, Alejandra Bravo won a seat at Toronto City Council.

Medium length documentary that aims to shine a light on the artistic excellence of women percussionists in the city of Toronto, Canada, while documenting the social, racial and gender-based barriers they have faced in their field of practice. Through interviews, dialogues and reflections made around the days of the festival hosted by Lula Lounge called "Women in Percussion" in 2019, the project will explore the art of percussion and the diversity of the music scenes of Toronto today. Featuring Magdelys Savigne, Yeti “Lady Son” Ajasin and Joy Lapps, as main characters, this film explores the background of these three extraordinary artists who have fought for the freedom to become the masterful percussionists they are.
