Poetry in motion. Our international shorts program shares emotional examinations of identity, environment, relationships, and grief. Poignant and poetic language and visuals connect these films from across Latin America and beyond. Each of the films presented in this program use unique filmmaking techniques to present groundbreaking ideas. 

Genres are artfully blended together in these five short films, celebrating the experimental as it mingles with fiction, animation, and documentary. At times self-reflective, at times turning the mirror towards the audience, occasionally bordering on the absurd, these films are sure to entertain, but may also surprise!

Isthmus weaves together indigenous wisdom and storytelling to explore the memory of and resistance against extractive colonialism in the south of Mexico. The film interacts with different voices in the landscape and attempts to escape human-centrism.

Do murderers sleep? The purple color of a dark night, the sound of the marimba with its sweet music is mistaken for fear. The long day of war is over, but the war continues. The film translates the desolation caused by the violence of the Colombian armed conflict through the poetic voice of Maria Mercedes Carranza (1945-2003) and the audiovisual dialogue between 9 Colombian artists. The archival images, the artists' memories, and the recurring use of animated loops bring to life the landscapes ravaged by violence and construct a polyphony of memory and mourning, a universal song of pain.

Sofía is putting up search posters of her missing boyfriend Luis all over town. Copies of his picture surround her. Luis is one of the more than 80.000 missing persons in Mexico. At night Sofía faces a recurring dream: Little by little her world transforms into paper. First the birds, then the ground, her room, until even death is made of paper. PAPEL tells this Mexican story of mourning and hope in black and white still images.
