Continuing and complimenting aluCine 2020’s themes of “migration in cinema” and “Latin women in cinema,” our closing night film is a deeply powerful piece about relationships across time and borders. Created by Heidi Hassan and Patricia Perez, A Media Voz (In a Whisper) reflects upon the two filmmakers’ own relationship, and tells an intimate and personal story of two friends, separated for fifteen years, who begin a heartfelt correspondence through video letters. Beginning with their lives in Cuba, where they worked together as filmmakers, they share their journeys. The struggles of living illegally in Europe, of being kept from their passions, the joys and pains of love, the sense of wonder found in new places. With captivating cinematography and poetic prose, this story transcends borders to bring a story of friendship and deep connection.
After getting a degree in Cinematography from the International Film School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba in 2002, Heidi Hassan emigrated to Switzerland where she continued her professional training at the Haute Ecole d’Art et Design in Geneva (HEAD). She got her diploma in Film Directing in 2008. Nowadays she reconciles her personal work as a filmmaker and visual artist with numerous collaborations as a director of photography. Her work has been presented in prestigious international film festivals where they received several awards and critical acclaim. A Media Voz (In a Whisper) is her second full-length documentary, made in collaboration with Patricia Pérez Fernández.
After getting a degree in Drama from Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Patricia Pérez Fernández continued her training at the International Film School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, where she got her diploma in Film Directing in 2002.
